Make your own Tie-Dye Mickey Head Shirt

This simple and fun tee-shirt design looks like traditional tie-dye but without the mess!

Supplies:

  • pre-washed white tee shirts
  • permanent markers–I used Sharpie markers
  • Isopropyl Alcohol
  • Eye dropper
  • Rubber bands
  • Glasses in two different sizes (One size for head and a smaller size for the ears)
Directions:
1. Decide where you would like your mouse head to be positioned and place the bigger glass under the front of the shirt and secure with a rubber band.
2. Begin dotting around the edge of the glass  with the permanent markers. You can alternate colors and experiment using dots or dashes. Make sure you are letting the ink soak into the shirt.
3. Using the eye dropper, apply isopropyl alcohol around the edge of the glass where you just colored. Now watch as the colors begin to spread.
4. Remove the glass and repeat the above direction for each ear.

Tips:
  • The more isopropyl alcohol you apply, the more the color will spread.
  • Sharpie recommends that before you wash the shirt,  you  apply a heat setting to it. Throwing it in the dryer for a few minutes should help set the design and minimize fading.

July Guest Writer & Giveaway

Subscribe to our monthly newsletter for Disney tips, discounts, news, and more!

Our next issues comes out July 5th.

Next month I’m heading to Universal Orlando for the very first time. I can’t wait to see The Wizarding Word of Harry Potter! I know this is probably self-serving on my part, but this month’s featured guest writer is Tracey, one of the co-hosts from The 100% Unofficial Universal Orlando Podcast. I am looking forward to her tips.

Tracey and her husband Lee are both huge Universal and Disney fans.  They have always been active in the respective communities and forums, listening to many wonderful podcasts and wishing they could somehow get involved… so they just bit the metaphorical bullet and went for it. They decided to podcast about Universal Orlando Resort for 2 reasons:

  1. They love Universal and think it is rather under appreciated at times, and
  2. there are already thousands of Disney shows out there.

Lee came up with the show name in what he calls ‘a moment of genius’ and works out each show’s running order, while Tracey naturally leans towards the organization and creation of things like the Facebook page. They have released six episodes to date, and their fan base keeps growing by leaps and bounds. They hope to keep entertaining old and new listeners for a long time to come. Make sure you listen in because they have an exciting announcement to make very soon!

The podcast is available from iTunes and Podbean. You can contact them at unofficialuniversal@yahoo.co.uk with feedback, questions, ideas, SPEW (the Society for the Promotion of Employee Welfare) stories, or if you are interested in being a guest. Don’t forget to “like” them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter @UUOPodcast and @UUOPTracey. They are also on DisCOT.

While not Harry Potter or Universal related, I’m giving away a one of a kind pink computer case to one lucky newsletter subscriber. You cannot buy these in stores. I received it as a gift at the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration and my MacBook already has a comfy home. It’s made from faux pink alligator and 100% pixie dust. The carrying strap is located inside the bag. What are you waiting for? Subscribe to our monthly newsletter today!

Israel, Africa & Spain in World Showcase?

“If we can bring together the technical know-how of American industry and the creative imagination of the Disney organization–I’m confident we can create right here in Disney World a showcase to the world of the American free enterprise system.” –Walt Disney

A friend of mine shared with me a wonderful vintage Disney book, “Walt Disney World Epcot Center: A Pictorial Souvenir.” The copyright date is 1982, the year Epcot opened.

The book begins talking about Future World. I love the iconic images used to represent each pavilion. Each pavilion also had a sponsor: Bell System for Spaceship Earth, Exxon for The Universe of Energy, General Motors for The World of Motion, Kodak for Journey into Imagination, Kraft for The Land, Sperry Univac for Epcot Computer Central, and General Electric for Horizons. What I found most intriguing was the section on World Showcase.

World Showcase today features eleven countries. Go ahead and count the flags above. The original opening day design only featured nine countries, with three additional countries “coming soon”– Morocco, Equatorial Africa, and Spain. Norway and Morocco were not part of the original design it seems.

The Israel pavilion reminds me of the Moroccan pavilion. “The Menorah, symbol of the state of Israel, stands at a courtyard center, surrounded by buildings reflecting the rich balance of new and old. Walk through ancient Jerusalem to an amphitheater to hear performances of both classical and folk music. Sample native dishes under the shade of olive and cypress trees in the Israel pavilion.”

It’s interesting how close the Equatorial Africa pavilion is to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. At Disney they say that they never throw away any ideas. It is evident that the idea for Disney’s Animal Kingdom had been brewing for years. ”The Equatorial Africa pavilion takes you on safari though a world of natural beauty and adventure. You’ll view the drama of wild animals from the safety of a giant Cailcedra tree. You’ll feel the electrifying energy of the “Heartbeat of Africa” show and sway to the jungle beat of the music and dance. Alex Haley, noted author of Roots, is your host for “Africa Rediscovered,” an adventure uncovering Africa’s ancient heritage.”

Lately rumors have been circling that Brazil might be joining World Showcase. If that is true, it will be interesting to see if it resembles the Spain pavilion. ”Take a spectacular journey through Spain by film to a little known and out-of-the way vacation Edens. A ride attraction captures the country’s passionate heritage and spirit in her arts. In a waterside restaurant, indulge in tapas, or Spanish-style finger food–a blend of varied ingredients but suitable to simple tastes. And browse the market places of striking contrast, from pueblo village to aristocratic opulence.”

What country would you like to see added to World Showcase?
